7 Ways To Take Good Care of Your Teeth

Taking good care of your teeth is a daily effort and a lifetime commitment. It requires continuous care using oral hygiene products and developing good oral habits.

1. Brush effectively

Doing a great job of brushing your teeth on a daily basis is the first step towards oral hygiene. Brush slowly, gently and circularly to remove plaque. Unremoved plaque can lead to to calculus buildup and gingivitis (early gum disease).

2. Clean your tongue thoroughly

Bad mouth odour and oral problems are consequences of accumulation of plaque on the tongue. Remember to brush your tongue very well whenever you brush your mouth.

3. Use a good toothpaste

There are various toothpaste in the marketplace. Regardless of your choice, make sure it contains fluoride. To avoid tooth decade and other oropharyngeal problems, use fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride provides protection for the teeth as well as fight mouth germs that can lead to tooth decay.

4. Use mouthwash

Using mouthwash improves oral hygiene. However, many people neglect this area of oral care. Schwartz says mouthwash helps in three ways: It reduces the amount of acid in the mouth, cleans hard-to-brush areas in and around the gums, and re-mineralizes the teeth. “Mouthwashes are useful as an adjunct tool to help bring things into balance,” he explains. “I think in children and older people, where the ability to brush and floss may not be ideal, a mouthwash is particularly helpful.”

5. Drink more water

Water is essential for good health. Specifically, it is important for oral hygiene. Drinking water after each meal helps to remove food particles. In addition, cleaning your mouth with water after meal helps some of the negative effects of sticky and acidic foods and beverages in between brushes.

6. Reduce Acidic and Sugary food.

It is necessary to limit intake of sugary and acidic food for good oral health. More often than not, sugar converts into acid in the mouth, which can then erode the enamel of your teeth. These acids are what lead to cavities. Acidic fruits, teas, and coffee can also wear down tooth enamel. While you don’t necessarily have to avoid such foods altogether, it doesn’t hurt to be mindful.

7. See your dentist twice a year

Developing good oral habits as mentioned above will help you to experience good oral health. However, this is not enough. It is also important to schedule clinic visit to a dentist once in six months. Dentists will help you remove calculus, identify cavities, and spot potential oral issues quickly before it degenerates.
