What is the difference between Gardasil 4 and Gardasil 9?

How many doses of Gardasil 9 are needed?

Two doses are given to those who start the course between the ages of 9 and 14, spaced 6 to 12 months apart. Three doses are given to those starting at age 15 or older, and to people who are immunocompromised, usually at 0, 2 and 6 months. Your clinician will confirm the schedule.

At what age should the HPV vaccine be given?

Vaccination is most effective when given before any exposure to HPV, which is why programmes target ages 9 to 14. Older adolescents and adults can still benefit and are vaccinated on the three-dose schedule.

Should boys receive the HPV vaccine?

Yes. HPV causes anal, penile and oropharyngeal cancers as well as genital warts in men, and vaccinating boys reduces transmission across the population.

Can Gardasil 9 be given to someone already sexually active?

Yes. Prior activity does not rule out vaccination. A person may not have encountered all nine types, so protection against the remaining ones is still worthwhile. The vaccine will not clear an existing infection.

Do I still need cervical screening after vaccination?

Yes. The vaccine does not cover every cancer-causing HPV type, so regular cervical screening remains essential for women regardless of vaccination status.

How is the vaccine given?

By intramuscular injection, normally into the upper arm, administered by a healthcare professional. Patients are usually observed for about 15 minutes afterwards because fainting can occur, particularly in adolescents.

What are the side effects of Gardasil 9?

Most commonly pain, swelling or redness at the injection site, along with headache, tiredness, mild fever, nausea or dizziness. These usually settle within a day or two. Serious reactions are rare.

Can Gardasil 9 be given during pregnancy?

HPV vaccination is not recommended during pregnancy. If a dose is due, it is normally deferred until after delivery. Breastfeeding is not a barrier to vaccination. Discuss timing with your clinician.

How is the vaccine stored?
