THE PREVENTABLE DEATHS: A CALL FOR ACTION

In Nigeria, chronic conditions mortality rates are among the highest in the world. Most patients suffer from complications due to barrier in accessing genuine, affordable medicines, healthcare facilities and personalized care. 1 in 3 deaths in Nigeria is due to chronic conditions.

7 out of 10 cancer patients die in Nigeria. 2 in 3 diabetes patients die due to diabetes complications and 6 out of 10 Nigerian adults above 35 years have high blood pressure. Statistics show that many of the premature deaths in Nigeria is due to chronic conditions and its complications, which can be prevented. These untimely deaths can be prevented if the causes are addressed. Identifying the causes of these deaths is the first step towards seeing a change.

THE LACK

Access to genuine, affordable medicines, health services, resources and tools for people with chronic, complex and rare medical conditions is a global challenge, especially in LMICs. According to WHO country report, Nigeria has a high burden of NCDs, which contributes to 27% of deaths in 2019. The age standardized mortality rate across four major NCDs (Cardiovascular Diseases, Chronic Respiratory Disease, Cancer and Diabetes) was 565 per 100,000 in males and 546 per 100,000 in females in 2021, compared to 300 per 100,000 population in UK and 180 per 100,000 population in Japan.

Fake and counterfeit medicines kill over 200,000 people yearly in Africa. Lack of access to specialty medicines for people with cancers and other complex or rare health conditions remain a barrier. Addressing these barriers will help reduce number of deaths, improve health outcomes and reduce cost of healthcare for chronic patients.
