It belongs to a category of medications called progestogens and is used to treat certain hormone-dependent cancers, namely breast cancer. It is a synthetic form of the naturally occurring progesterone hormone. It is also indicated to treat unexplained weight loss, cachexia (weakness) and anorexia (loss of appetite) in patients with weak immune systems and cancer.
