Rectogesic 4mg/g Rectal Ointment (30g) – Glyceryl Trinitrate for Anal Fissure

Rectogesic rectal ointment contains glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) 4mg/g and is used to relieve the pain of chronic anal fissure — a small tear in the lining of the anal canal. Applied inside the anal canal, it relaxes the internal anal sphincter and improves blood flow, which eases the muscle spasm and pain and helps the fissure heal.

It is a prescription treatment normally used for a course of several weeks. Headache is a common effect because glyceryl trinitrate also relaxes blood vessels elsewhere in the body.

HubPharm dispenses Rectogesic only against a valid prescription from a registered prescriber, verified by a licensed pharmacist before release.

FAQ

What is Rectogesic used for?

It relieves the pain of chronic anal fissure by relaxing the anal sphincter muscle and improving blood flow so the tear can heal. Your prescriber decides whether it is right for you.

Do I need a prescription for Rectogesic in Nigeria?

Yes. It is a prescription-only medicine, and HubPharm supplies it only against a valid prescription verified by our pharmacists. Your doctor can e-prescribe directly to us.

How much does Rectogesic cost in Nigeria?

Current pricing for the 30g tube is shown above and reflects our sourcing at the time of listing. Contact our pharmacy team for current pricing, availability and support with HMO claims.

How is Rectogesic applied?

A small amount is applied to the anal canal as directed by your prescriber, usually twice a day for a set number of weeks. Wash your hands before and after, and follow the exact instructions in the leaflet and from your pharmacist. Do not use more than prescribed.

Why does it cause a headache?

Glyceryl trinitrate widens blood vessels, which can cause a throbbing headache, especially at first. This often eases as treatment continues. Ask your pharmacist about simple pain relief if needed, and tell your prescriber if the headache is severe.

Who should not use Rectogesic?

It is not suitable for people taking medicines for erectile dysfunction (such as sildenafil), those with certain heart conditions or severe anaemia, or during migraine attacks. Tell your prescriber and pharmacist about all your medicines and conditions before starting.

Can I use it during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Only if your prescriber decides the benefit outweighs the risk. Tell them if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding.

What are the common side effects?

Headache is the most common. Dizziness or light-headedness can also occur, so take care when standing up. Report anything severe or persistent to your prescriber.

How should Rectogesic be stored?

Store below 25°C in the original pack, out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date, and return unused or expired ointment to a pharmacy for safe disposal.

Description

Rectogesic 4mg/g – Full Product Information

Active ingredient: Glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) 4mg/g.

Form: Rectal ointment. 30g tube.

Classification: Prescription only, pharmacist verified.

How It Works

The pain of a chronic anal fissure is driven largely by spasm of the internal anal sphincter, which also reduces blood flow to the area and slows healing. Glyceryl trinitrate releases nitric oxide, which relaxes that muscle and widens local blood vessels. Relaxing the sphincter and restoring blood flow relieves pain and gives the fissure a chance to heal.

Using the Ointment

Rectogesic is applied to the anal canal for a course set by the prescriber, commonly over several weeks. Consistent, correct application matters more than occasional use. Because headache is common early on, prescribers often advise starting gradually and using simple pain relief. Follow the manufacturer’s leaflet and your pharmacist’s guidance on exactly how much to apply and how often.

Treatment Context

Ointment treatment works best alongside measures that reduce strain on the fissure: a high-fibre diet, plenty of fluids, and avoiding constipation and straining. If the fissure does not improve, the prescriber may review the diagnosis or consider other options.

Important Interactions

Glyceryl trinitrate must not be combined with medicines for erectile dysfunction such as sildenafil, tadalafil or vardenafil, as together they can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. Always tell your prescriber and pharmacist about every medicine you take.

Storage and Disposal

Store below 25°C in the original packaging, out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack. Return unused or expired ointment to a pharmacy for safe destruction.
